K.V. Anand to direct Ranbir?

Southern action remakes are the rage in Bollywood and several examples of them being hits can be found in films like Wanted, Ready and Bodyguard. Now Siruthai is being remade as Rowdy Rathore with Akshay Kumar. South directors seem to be hot property with Bollywood stars looking for a good action flick.

The latest to join this bandwagon is Ranbir Kapoor who is reportedly looking for a change of image after his Rockstar and several other films are huge hits.

The buzz is that he has been signed up for the Ko remake by K.V. Anand backed by a big Bollywood production house.

Looks like Ranbir would be ideal for the role played by Jiiva earlier being young, energetic and every inch looking like a young photo journalist.

Much awaited 'Vettai' is a pongal release

UTV Motion Pictures and Thirrupathi Brothers' first co-production venture 'Vettai' will be releasing during Pongal, 2012. Vettai stars Arya, Madhavan, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul in lead roles, under the direction of top South director N. Lingusamy with music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Lingusamy, whose  last film 'Paiyya' was a box-office success, is confident Vettai will be his biggest and best so far. Produced by Thirrupathi Brothers in association with UTV Motion Pictures, the film revolves around the two brothers and two sisters played by the lead artiste mentioned.

The movie is one of the most awaited commercial entertainers of 2012.

Vishnuvardhan to direct Ajith

Director Vishnuvardhan has said that he would soon be directing actor Ajith’s upcoming film which is yet to be titled.  Vishnu last directed Ajith in the colossal hit Billa in 2007.  The duo hasn’t come together after film’ success.  In fact, Vishnu was to direct the sequence film Billa-2 but couldn’t do so due to his prior commitments in Tollywood where he was mid-way through the making of a Telugu film.

After Billa-2, Ajith would be starring in a film to be produced by Vijaya Productions, one of the oldest production houses in the country.  After this film, he might start work on Vishnu’s directorial venture which would be produced at a huge budget by A.M. Rathanm and would have music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.  Vishnu ha showed Ajith very stylishly in Billa and the star’s fans would want Vishnu once again to show Ajith in an youthful manner.

Talking about his film with Ajith, Vishnu says that his film won’t be a remake of any film and that it would be a very sleek film.  The script is being penned right now, he revealed and added that he was determined to make the new film more successful than Billa.  “I’m happy to be getting an offer to work with Ajith again.  I can’t say anything about Ajith’s character in the film as the script is yet to be completed.

“All I can say is that the film would be catering to the needs and expectations of Ajith’s huge number of fans.  I’m not disappointed about the fact that cinematographer Nirav Shah, who worked in my films like Arindhum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal, Billa and Sarvam, is too busy to work with me in my next venture with Ajith.

“Yuvan would be scoring the music of the film.  The main reason for Yuvan’s songs becoming so popular in all my films is that I never interfere with Yuvan’s work nor offer him any suggestions,” concludes Vishnuvardhan.

Movie Review: Mayakkam Enna

Here comes Mayakkam Enna, one the most awaited films of the year from the stable of Selvaraghavan.  For the third time, Selvaa unites on-screen with his illustrious actor-brother after successful and critically acclaimed films such as Kadhao Kondein and Puduppettai.  There was a high degree of expectancy among the fans of both Selvaa and Dhanush and the duo hasn’t disappointed the fans at all.

The movie is about the ambitions and dreams of an aspiring photographer.  The movie everything in it to entice youngsters to watch the movie again and again: it has friendship and the pains that go with it, it has raw romance, it shows the passion of a professional to achieve something big in life, it shows betrayal and heartbreak and depicts fight back.

Storyline:  Freelance photographer Karthik (Dhanush) lives life on his own terms.  Considered a ‘genius’ by his peers, he goes about his work stressing himself too hard in his attempt to become the most important man in his profession.  A natural prodigy that he is, he does possess the uncanny knack of capturing unforgettable moments and elements of life through his lens in the most unexpected manner.  His profession makes him an expert in portfolio photos and an excellent wedding photographer but wildlife photography remains his passion.

Karthik and his close pal Sundar (Sundar) enjoy life in a typically youthful manner along with their select gang of friends.  One day Sundar brings Yamini (Richa), his girlfriend, to their place where she gets introduced to Karthik.  The first interaction of Karthick and Yamini, though, turns into a bitter experience.  This, however, doesn’t deter them from developing a deep and special ‘relationship’ albeit in a slow and steady manner.

In order not to antagonize his friend, Karthick tries his best to get away from Yamini but circumstances and the girl’s love makes them almost inseparable.  Karthik and Yamini eventually get married the beginning of their marital life turns out to be the worst moment of courtship as Karthik is humiliated by a famous photographer who steals his works.

This leaves him crestfallen and downcast.  Obviously, his martial life gets disturbed even as Yamini endeavours to bring him back to normalcy and encouraging him that he could find his moment of success at any time.  However hard she might try, .she doesn’t succeed in bringing him back to his usual self.  Watch the film in theatres to find out how their life develops and what happens to the dreams and ambitions of Karthik.

Script analysis:

Selvaa has cleverly used two or three main characters to present his story in a likeable and entertaining manner.  The film is definitely a deviation from the run-of-the-mill stuff that is delivered from Kollywood’s dream factory from time to time.  Selva has also excelled in making a ‘very different’ movie which is sensitive, engaging and soul-searching.

Cast and crew review:

At the outset, rest assured that it’s one of Dhanush’s special performances in his career.  The national award-winning act appears to be making rapid strides vis-à-vis his performance in his films.  As a freelance photographer who is city-bred, Dhanush dazzles in one of his note-worthy performances in recent years.  The actor’s maturity shows in his facial expressions and subtle body languages.

Newcomer Richa fits the role aptly as Dhanush’s wife and emotes well.  Though it’s still early days, she appears a perfect heroine material who could go places in Kollywood in future.  Sundar’s performance adds to the film’s weightage.

Cinematographer Ramji has done a fabulous job.  Young music director G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music needs special mention not only for the songs he has composed in the film but also for the amazing background score.  In some sequences which move sans any dialogue, GVP’s background aptly makes up for the missing dialogues.

Sans any clichéd sequence, Selvaa engages the viewers in a nice narrative and narrates the story without compromising on the commercial aspects.  Nobody other than Selva would have had the courage to show on-screen a girl falling in love with her boyfriend’s best friend.  The total transformation of Richa’s character in the second half is appreciable and acceptable in the backdrop of the story.

Though the movie appears to ‘move’ slowly in the post-interval section, an emotion-filled climax compensates for the lack of pace.  The climax, though not a totally unexpected one, does move the viewers to tears.

Movie review: Poraali

The much awaited film from Samuthirakani and Sasikumar combination has come out. The movie, written and directed by Samuthirakkani, has a pacy narrative with a lot of messages. The movie talks about caring for others and sensitive handling of mentally challenged people. It also speaks about encouraging budding talents.

Producer Sasikumar plays the lead role just like he did in Nadodigal while the core members of Nadodigal team play important roles.

Porali begins in a comical mood featuring Kumaran (Sasikumar) and Nallavan (Allari Naresh) seeking shelter in a in their Pulikutty's (Ganja Karuppu) room in a compound in Chennai. The place has many families living in the same compound. Both Kumaran and Nallavan get close to the people in the surrounding by their do-good and fun filled nature. They work in a petrol bunk and start a side business to earn more money.

Bharathy (Swathi), who lives nearby, falls for Kumaran's good ways. Kumaran refuses to accept her feelings but finally her strong love concurs. Meanwhile the business grows bit rather dramatically and the twist comes in the same manner.

Kumaran is being hunted by his relatives from his native village and Kumaran and Nallavan run to escape from them. The relatives reveal that Kumaran and Nallavan had escaped from the mental asylum. Bharathi is shattered and Kumaran tells her the real story. His past was a case of victimization by his father’s weakness and, step mother’s cruelty, and her relatives’ violent behavior.

The rest of the movie deals with how he tackles the greedy relatives who want to eliminate him.

The major plus point of Porali is that it moves fast. It also has some moments that provide fun and thrill. The initial scenes are enjoyable though they lack logic. The scenes portraying the happenings in mental asylum have been sensitively handled.

The problem with the movie is that it lacks finesse and coherence. It also lacks logic though some of the scenes look new (the scenes involving Vasundhara). The twist comes as a surprise but the flashback and the climax are but routine.

Kathir's cinematography is a big asset to the film while Sundar C Babu’s background score is racy and loud.

Sasikumar handles the role with energy and dynamism. Allari Naresh fits the role perfectly. His portrayal of mental problem is quite impressive. Swathi’s role provides some colour to the proceedings. Kanja Karuppu gets a meaty role and does justice to that. Soori impresses with his modulations and casual approach.

Despite the routine scenes and predictable climax Samithirakkani has managed to provide a fast paced movie that has some emotional appeal.

Times magazine hails Kolaveri

The Kolaveri number is fast making it bigger and bigger each day. The latest news from Mumbai is that Dhanush, the singer of the song and hero of the film met Amithabh Bachchan at his residence. He was later seen with Abhishek Bachchan at a film premiere in Mumbai too.

Ever since Kolaveri Di was uploaded on YouTube, the popularity of the song has been on the raise. The trippy number got nearly 17 million views and caught the imagination of the youth who made it a sort of anthem.   You Tube has honoured the track with a Gold Award for getting the most number of hits.

Now the song has been hailed by the prestigious TIME magazine. “Perhaps the ballad’s universal theme is part of its appeal – apparently it’s about a guy who’s been dumped by his girlfriend. The song is also notable for its pretty nonsensical use of words, employing a unique language probably best described as 'Tamglish' – mixing Tamil and English.”

People are commenting on the fact that Time magazine of USA has reportedly written about an Indian song like this after twenty years, the previous instance being about Rahman and Roja.

Movie Review: Osthe

Director Dharani, who gave us some memorable commercial films like Dhil, Dhool, and Ghilly, is back after a long gap. He has chosen to remake Salman Khan’s smash hit Dabang to make a comeback. STR alias Silambarasan alias Simbu dons Khaki and returns to his masala mode after a couple of different films. Since both are known for their magical touch when it comes to masala flicks, the expectations are bound to escalate.

It is a typical hero centric film with the hero shooting at his will, uttering punch lines in abundance, romancing like a Romeo, dancing like a rap singer, and flying (read fighting) like a flight. STR, like most of the so called commercial heroes, has no limits. He can do anything and everything.

Osthe is a cop story set in Thirunelveli. Osthe Velan (STR) is a young police officer who has who fights corrupt and greedy at Kattupakkam police station in Thirunelveli. He is a kind of Robinhood who robs the greedy and pays the poor.

He has a half brother Balan (Jithan Ramesh) with whom he has love-hate relationship. He falls in love with Neduvalli (Richa Gangopadhyaya). He has a special bond for his mother (Revathi) but dislikes his step father (Nasser).

Boxer Daniel (Sonu Sood), a powerful underworld dada wants to enter politics and hence he contests in the elections. He uses all unlawful activities to win the elections. But Velan stands in between him and victory, as he foils all his efforts to distribute money to the voters. Daniel tries to kill Velan but Velan outsmarts him. Daniel gets frustrated and furious when all of his attempts get defeated. He is ready to go to any extent to kill Velan and win by elections. The confrontation reaches a boiling point with lot of killings and bomb blasts.

Everything gets settled with a bloody battle between the two in the climax.

There is no meaning in looking at a masala film with a logical eye but Osthe takes too many things for granted. The director has done little work to make the movie look credible. He hasn’t learnt any lesson from the failure of Kuruvi. Dharani was once known as a commercial director who could present the film in an engaging and credible manner. He seems to have lost his touch. The package is too clichéd and predictable to relish. The movie looks like a spoof rather than a serious attempt at making a cop story. Cliché is the word that could suit well for everything in this movie.

Some of the scenes are quite irritating. The marriage scene, for example, doesn’t appeal at all.

Coming to the performance it was Salman Khan's macho image, unique style, and charisma that carried the movie in the Hindi version. Simbu tries to emulate Sallu Bhai but ends up looking like a school boy performing in a fancy dress competition. But there is no denying the fact that Simbu manages to entertain with his typical style. He oozes energy in every scene though he doesn’t look like a cop. He has done well in rendering dialogues in Thirunelveli dialect.

Well built Sonu Sood makes a powerful villain with his expressions and body language. Richa Gangopadhyaya adds some colour to the narrative. Jithan Ramesh plays his part well.

Santhanam, Thambi Ramaiah, Vaiyapuri, Mayilsamy, and Thambi Ramiah add to the fun element of the movie which looks like a spoof of cop films. Saranya Mohan and Nasserhave been wasted while Revathy gets a strong role and shines. VTV Ganesh has done well as the irresponsible father of the heroine. Bollywood sexy-siren Mallika Sherawat sizzles in an item number.

Gopinath’s cinematography is the highlight of the movie. Thaman's music is loud but he has given some peppy numbers that could make the audiences dance.

Osthe means costly or high quality. The movie is neither. Rather it has come out as a casual effort to please the masses without bothering about credibility or brilliance.
