Directors turning actors is nothing new in Tamil Cinema. The latest to join the list is Kalanjiam, who is also playing the main lead apart from wielding the megaphone in Karungali. When quizzed about the title, Kalanjiam recently said that the protagonist in this story is wild (like the Karungali tree); he breaks all ethics and tries to go against humanity. The film also has Anjali, Sunitha Verma, Asmitha and Shrinivasan in prominent roles. Karungali has been cleared by the Censors with an 'A' certificate.

Post Paruthi Veeran and Subramaniapuram, a new trend has emerged in Kollywood rugged hero, tragic climax, abusive dialogues and dark locations. But what many directors forget is that both Paruthi Veeran and Subramaniapuram were backed with strong plots and racy screenplays. Coming back to Karungali, the film basically narrates the story of a drug peddler!
The film begins with an accident scene, where Dr. Kanimozhi (Sunitha Verma) lies on the road fighting for her life. Next we see a chase sequence between Pottalam Ravi (Kalanjiam) and police officials. Ravi gets caught, but before that, he manages to save Kanimozhi's life. After this incident, Kanimozhi develops a soft comer for Ravi and decides to know more about his past. And thus the story of Ravi unfolds...

Ravi is a drug peddler in Chennai and lives in a neighboring slum along with his friends. Ravi just needs two things in life: money and women. To get these two things, he will do anything. Meanwhile Ravi's childhood friend Senkudi (Ashmitha) is in love with him. After a point, Ravi too reciprocates her love, but later, Senkudi finds out that he was just using her for his physical pleasure. When Senkudi gets pregnant, she forces Ravi to marry her but he gets angry instead and kills her.

Fast forward to present. After reading Ravi's story, Kanimozhi decides to marry him and the film takes a six year leap. Kanimozhi now meets Amudhanila (Anjali), an innocent village girl, who doesn't have kids after three years of marriage. Ravi is a changed man now and he takes care of all the household things. Kanimozhi narrates the story of Amudhanila to Ravi. What happens next? Is Ravi a really changed person now? Watch out for Karungali...

Though director Kalaingiam's story is not the regular run-of-the-mill type, the dragging screenplay and unwanted glamour sequences slow down the pace. Performance-wise, Shrinivasan, who appears as Anjali's loving husband, has done a pretty good job. Sunitha Verma as a doctor fits the bill, though we wonder why the character is so adamant to marry a criminal. Anjali has given an average performance and director Kalanjiam needs to improve. Music composed by Srikanth Deva is OK. Kalanjiam has given a neat performance but he need to improve his body language and facial expressions. The film's second half reminds us of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (especially the background score), Gautham Menon's Nandunisi Naayagal and Shankar's Anniyan.
